Serving

A Stingaree alumna helping those in need

“Our vision is to be an enduring presence providing health care in Miami-Dade County as long as there are underserved children and adults without access to health care. Our partners and philanthropic supporters make it possible to serve our community. We welcome the interest and support of the MHS alumni and would be grateful to hear from them not only as potential donors and volunteers but also if they or a loved one have a need for healthcare and lack access.” -

Those served at St. John Bosco Clinic have different life stories, faces and nationalities.  They are young, old, working poor, or unemployed but they share very similar needs: the need for healthcare and difficulty meeting that need for themselves and their families.  The St. John Bosco Clinic is their safety net.

The St. John Bosco Clinic opened on July 1, 1992 and has continuously maintained its service to the Miami-Dade community.  The mission of St. John Bosco Clinic is to serve the basic primary medical needs of the uninsured and underserved children and adults in Miami-Dade County, in the manner of Jesus, who healed.

Originally situated at the St. John Bosco Church grounds in Little Havana, the clinic’s service delivery grew from one day to five days per week. In 2007, the clinic moved to its current location on the grounds of Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 730 NW. 34th Street, in the Allapattah neighborhood. SJBC is supported by the SSJ Health Foundation, volunteer physicians and support staff, nurse practitioners, philanthropic individual, corporate and private donations, and in-kind support from community partners. UM DOCS provides specialty care through its faculty and medical students one evening per week.  FIU Health Services Administration and UM School of Public Health are among other university programs that also support the clinic's work.

Sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine, the St. John Bosco Clinic is a member of the Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics and committed to providing free primary care services as a safety net for those who are unable to access other community services, reducing unnecessary use of local emergency rooms.

The clinic has seen continuous growth and need for services from those who live in Miami-Dade.  In the last fiscal year SJBC saw 1,122 patients and provided 4,796 clinic visits.  The number of patients seen was 15% higher than the previous year and clinic encounters rose by 7%.  Children and adults receive primary and preventive care services including, pediatrics, laboratory and diagnostics, mammograms and gynecological care.  Through partnerships with community supporters, SJBC is able to offer physical therapy and a variety of specialty physician care.

Specialty care is provided by a network of more than 25 volunteer physicians who give of their time and talent to St. John Bosco Clinic patients in their private offices.  Because of the generosity of physician volunteers, 448 private specialty physician visits were delivered to patients served through the Clinic.  Health education, nutrition, and physical activity classes are offered several times a year.  Outside the clinic setting, St. John Bosco Clinic coordinates health fairs at various locations.
